HVACR Passport

An HVAC unit effectively disappears the moment it leaves the loading dock. Manufacturers lose serial-level visibility, distributors take parts orders by phone and fax, contractors have no proof to lean on in a warranty dispute, and homeowners have no idea what is installed or what is still covered. The record lives in spreadsheets and phone calls, which is exactly where disputes and warranty fraud come from.

Jared is the technical partner on HVACR Passport and built the entire platform: a Django API, three Next.js web portals, two React Native apps and the marketing site. Every unit gets one record, created at the factory and carried through to the homeowner. Units move through an enforced lifecycle — nothing ships without passing QC and nothing is installed without the details that make a warranty real — with real paths for failed inspections, rework and returns. Every change is written to an audit log: who, what, from which state to which, and when.

On top of that one source of truth sit purpose-built surfaces: portals for manufacturers and for distributors and dealers, a browser app for homeowners and inspectors, a homeowner app that opens a unit's record by tapping its NFC tag or scanning its QR code, with service requests and maintenance reminders, and a contractor app built for the crawlspace — it reads the tag on the unit itself, records installs and startup surveys, and can retro-tag units that were installed before the platform existed. Around the core: parts catalog and ordering, support tickets, messaging between portals, ownership transfer when a house sells, expiring share links, AI-assisted diagnostics, and an API for manufacturers to sync from their ERP using keys that are stored only as hashes.

Manufacturers are isolated tenants across ten roles, so a distributor can carry ten brands without any of them seeing each other — and that isolation is covered by its own tests.

The largest system we have built: about 146,000 lines of code across seven codebases and roughly 2,100 automated tests, built in about six months. Web, mobile and physical NFC hardware in one product, deployed and in testing. It is the clearest demonstration of what separates us from agencies who only assemble page templates.
